Chapter Sixteen

Ihave almost finished sorting through Gill’s paperwork. Now, I just need to put it all into sensible spreadsheets so we can submit the figures to HMRC. It’s been a hard slog for the last three weeks, especially as I have had to keep my visits to the community centre secret from Peter. It’s not like he asks what I do with my time, I just don’t like keeping things from him. My savings are starting to add up though, and it feels good to be building a little nest egg to spend on our baby when the time eventually comes.

‘I’m off. See you tomorrow!’ I call out to Gill as I make my leave. She’s mopping the hall floor in preparation for her yoga class.

‘Hang on a minute.’ She jogs over, her thigh muscles popping under her shorts as she runs. Her physique is incredible.

‘Everything all right?’ I ask as she approaches me.

‘Yeah, all good, I was just wondering what you did with the personal receipts you found. I just want to go through them, in case any are related to the centre.’

I point out the envelope I have left on the desk and smile, proud of my efficiency. Suddenly, before I even know it’s happening, vomit works its way up my throat and I’m sick everywhere. Gill leaps back, but she’s not quick enough, and my semi-digested lunch splatters all over her sparkling floor and up her bare legs.

‘Oh my God!’ I cry out. ‘I’m so sorry!’

Without a word, Gill heads into the little kitchen and pulls out an old rag. She wipes down her legs while I fill a bucket with hot, soapy water. It doesn’t take long to clear up the mess, but I’m wracked with shame, made only worse by Gill’s ominous silence.

‘Everything okay?’ she asks kindly when we’re done. ‘That was quite … spectacular.’

I turn away, unable to face Gill’s concerned stare. I have never felt so ashamed in my life. Gill is an incredible woman to have remained so calm while covered in the contents of my stomach. Although, I bet she’s used to it – apparently some of the parties they have here can get pretty wild.

‘I must have eaten something dodgy,’ I tell her, still not meeting her eyes.

She makes a non-committal “hmm” noise, not believing me for a second. I swallow down another wave of nausea.

‘I’d better go. Thanks so much for … that. Sorry again.’

She waves her hand at me. ‘Nearest pharmacy is in Chilston, next town over. Or, the corner shop might sell what you may need. Next to the contraceptives, ironically.’

I finally meet her gaze, and I notice a twinkle dancing around her eyes. I bet mine look similar. I head off with a skip in my step to buy a pregnancy test.

Once home, I bound out of the car, clutching my brown paper bag to my chest. I am desperate to get inside.

‘You look like you’re up to something,’ Kay calls over from her door. ‘Like you’ve been up to no good!’

‘Let’s hope so!’ I call back.
